True Wealth
1 Timothy 6
Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed.
Years ago I met Gene Warr and his lovely wife (first as an elderly Navigators speaker who was using my church for their conference, and then three weeks later in his office at OKC). It wasn't until I asked Tom Elliff where I might find him that I discovered the greatness of the man. Property Developer (1/4 of OKC is called Warr acres), funder of what was then an unknown evangelist (Billy Graham; he went bankrupt funding him), rebuilt his business to write and fund Navigators discipleship materials (went bankrupt again doing this), rebuilt his developing business to fund Promise Keepers. I went over to his office location in a cheap dual occupancy house. I count it my privilege to have met one of the wealthiest men in America (wealthy in God's sight not man's). My understanding of wealth was changed that day permanently. And this very lovely couple so honoured my wife and I by serving us hot tea in their Royal Albert China with scones jam and cream. They exemplified a very simple lifestyle. But their reason was to do the greatest good for the gospel in order to honour our Lord and Saviour.
